At the start, she was simply fulfilling her father's wish, but over time, the special bricks have taken on added meaning for Debbie Mayer.

When her mother was a patient at the Port Charlotte Hospice House, Debbie and her father would often take time during their visits to stroll along the facility's Remembrance Walkways and read the heartfelt messages left as a tribute to loved ones. Following her mother's passing, Debbie's father urged her and her brother, Bruce Campbell, to honor their mother in a similar way.

"He really wanted to do it to remember Mom and to thank Tidewell for all they did for us," Debbie said. "Being a nurse myself, I was very impressed with how they handled everything and how caring they all were."

Almost three years to the day of her mother's death, Debbie's father died after spending his final days under Tidewell's care at the Englewood Hospice House. In dealing with this difficult time, Debbie and Bruce decided to continue the legacy they had begun for their mother at the Remembrance Walkway.

Today, 14 specially engraved bricks serve as a memorial to the lives of Bill and Joyce Campbell. The messages remember a husband, wife, mother, father, grandmother and grandfather for their love, kindness and strength.

"My parents were cremated, so there is no burial spot to go to. We know their souls have gone to heaven, but the walkway has become a special place for us," Debbie said. "Whenever Bruce is in town from New Jersey, we always go over to the hospice house, have a moment of silence and remember Mom and Dad."
